About Bill Aron

Bill Aron’s 30+year career as a photographer and a chronicler of Jewish communities around the world is both well-known and widely respected. His photographs have been exhibited in major museums and galleries throughout the United States and Israel, and appeared in a wide variety of publications and collections. Aron gained international recognition for his first book, From the Corners of the Earth, which chronicles the Jewish communities of the former Soviet Union, Cuba, Jerusalem, New York and Los Angeles. Algonquin Books published Aron’s second book, Shalom Y’all: Images of Jewish Life in the American South, with an introduction by Alfred Uhry.

Aron’s most recent book, New Beginnings: The Triumphs of 120 Cancer Survivors, focuses on cancer survivors who have not let their diagnosis prevent them from living their lives to the fullest; in many cases, the diagnosis has served as an impetus to better their lives. Aron lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two sons, where he is most likely the only photographer with a Ph.D. in sociology.

Bill Aron on New Beginnings: The Triumphs of 120 Cancer Survivors

I can’t control how long I live, but I can control how I live. Cancer taught me that. Photographer, author and cancer survivor Bill Aron writes that cancer forces people to put their lives on hold, and his new book, New Beginnings: The Triumphs of 120 Cancer Survivors, explores the question of what happens during the silent phase after treatment ends. This essay by Bill Aron describes the origins and lessons of this inspiring book and his own experience with a cancer diagnosis.
